Expected Effects

Some effects are normal rather than complications. Redness, mild swelling, small raised points at injection sites and light bruising are common after injectable treatments and usually settle within days.

Your aftercare tells you what is expected for the specific treatment you have had.

Recognising A Complication

A complication is anything beyond the expected effects, including spreading redness, increasing pain, heat, discharge, fever, blanching or mottling of the skin, visual changes, or asymmetry that is not settling.

Contact the clinic straight away if any of these occur.

How Complications Are Managed

• You will be assessed, in person where necessary and without charge for the assessment
• The complication and the management plan are recorded in your notes
• As a nurse who can prescribe, Gemma can prescribe directly where treatment is required
• Where a complication is outside the scope of the clinic, you will be referred promptly and supported through it
• You will not be left to manage a problem alone, and you will not be made to feel it is an inconvenience

Emergencies

For symptoms suggesting anaphylaxis, vascular occlusion or any airway problem, call 999 immediately. Emergency protocols and appropriate emergency medicines are held at the clinic and Gemma is trained in their use.

Reporting And Learning

Complications are recorded, reviewed and reported where required, including to the insurer and to the relevant reporting scheme for medicines and devices. Anything learned is used to improve practice.
